Equality is about making sure everyone is treated fairly and given an equal chance to access opportunities. It is not about treating everyone the same way. People may require different things to achieve similar outcomes.

Diversity means ‘difference’. When it is used in the same context as equality, it is about recognising and valuing individual as well as group differences. It also means treating people as individuals and placing positive value on the diversity they bring because of a protected characteristic or cultural background.

Wakefield District Reducing Healthcare Inequalities Community of Practice

From looking at the data about the health of the population, we know that there is still too much of a gap between the health of people in the most well-off areas of Wakefield district and people who live in poorer areas.

Data tells us that generally people in the Wakefield district will die younger than in other parts of the country and will spend more years of their lives in poor health.

Healthcare inequalities are an important aspect of wider health differences. 20-30% of health inequalities in Wakefield district are estimated to be caused by differences in access to, and experiences of healthcare as a whole.

The Reducing Healthcare Inequalities Community of Practice aims to highlight and share good practice, stimulate opportunities for collaboration and create a safe and innovative space to work together to support our shared commitment in reducing healthcare inequalities within our District.

Wakefield District Health and Care Partnership logo graphic device

We know health inequalities exist in Wakefield District and that some people have different access, experience and outcomes. We want to reduce those differences and remove them entirely where possible.

To make sure everyone is able to get the best out of health and care, we need to understand who our service users are, and what their individual needs are, so when they access services, they get the right care and have the best possible experience.
