Be Winter-ready! Stock Up, Stay Warm, and Keep Well
As the colder months approach, Wakefield District Health and Care Partnership and Wakefield Council are calling on local residents to take simple steps now to help keep themselves and loved ones healthy, warm, and well all winter long.
The NHS App is a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services. Residents can order repeat prescriptions and nominate a pharmacy for collection, book appointments and COVID-19 vaccinations and view their GP health record.
Dr Colin Speers, local GP and Medical Director for Integrated Community Services said: “Get prepared as the nights start to draw in by getting set up on the NHS App. As a GP, I encourage everyone to explore the app’s services and make it part of their healthcare routine.
“As we head into winter bug season, it’s also a good idea to have a small stock of basic medicines at home for minor illness or injury. Having essentials like paracetamol, plasters, indigestion remedies and anti-diarrhoeal medicine on hand means you’re ready to treat minor symptoms at home.”
The St John Ambulance website has advice on what you should keep in your first aid kit, or you can ask your local pharmacist for advice.
Vaccinations remain one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you from serious illnesses this winter.
Cllr Michelle Collins, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Vaccines are vital in helping us stay healthy through the winter season. We encourage everyone to keep up to date with their vaccinations, including flu, COVID-19, shingles and RSV if eligible. A quick visit to your GP or local pharmacy can make a big difference to your winter health.”
Residents are urged to book their winter vaccines early, as the best protection comes from being fully vaccinated before the season peaks. Cllr Michelle Collins continued: “It’s also really important that everyone keeps warm during the colder months to stay healthy.
“There are practical things you can do to stay warm and positive such as eating hot, healthy meals, wearing warm clothes and keeping active around the house.
“You can also visit one of our Warm Spaces where you can get a hot drink and some company.”
Together, we can ensure a healthier, safer winter for everyone.
