Development of King Street building does not include changes to the NHS Walk in Centre
An approved planning application to convert the upper floors of 47 King Street Wakefield into apartments will not include the floor occupied by the NHS Walk in Centre. The healthcare services provided there will continue as usual.
The timeline for the start of building work has yet to be confirmed. However, the intention is to keep the Walk in Centre open throughout any construction period, with minimal disruption to services.
The Walk in Centre offers assessment, diagnosis and treatment of urgent, non-life-threatening illnesses and minor injuries between 10am and 10pm seven days a week. The service is commissioned by Wakefield District Health and Care Partnership and delivered by Local Care Direct (LCD).
In 2023, the lease for the district’s Walk in Centre on King Street, Wakefield was extended for three years, until October 2026.
Work continues to identify suitable alternative premises before the lease expires.
The walk in service is open for patients (except children under six months and pregnancy related issues) who need same-day care and cannot wait to see their own GP. The service is operated by a dedicated team of experienced clinicians who can assess, diagnose and treat a range of minor illnesses and minor injuries that do not need an x-ray, including:
- ear, nose and throat problems
- sprains and strains
- wound infections
- minor burns and scalds
- minor head injuries
- skin conditions
- minor respiratory conditions
- mild abdominal pain or discomfort
- insect and animal bites and stings
- minor eye problems
- minor injuries to the back, shoulder and chest
- acute wound dressings
- emergency contraception
