Visit to Wakefield highlights collaborative working to implement the Pharmacy First initiative.

On 25 July 2024, the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England, David Webb, and colleagues from NHS England visited Trinity Medical Centre and Pharmacy Plus Health in Wakefield.

The visit was an opportunity to find out more about how the GP surgery and community pharmacy are working effectively together to deliver Pharmacy First.  David met with representatives from both the pharmacy and GP surgery, as well as Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire and NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.  Colleagues explained how Pharmacy First helps local patients and how strong partnership working also benefits both the pharmacy and surgery, making sure that services are being used most effectively and efficiently.

The Pharmacy First service, launched 31 January 2024, builds on the NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service and enables community pharmacies to offer treatment and some prescription medicine for seven specific conditions, without patients needing to see a GP.
